SOPRANO DARYNN ZIMMER TEAMS UP WITH CLASSIC GUITARIST ELIOT FISK IN AN ALBUM OF SPANISH, FRENCH AND NATIVE AMERICAN FOLK SONGS
“SAVAGE NIGHTINGALE” ALSO INCLUDES PERCUSSIONIST REX BENINCASA AND PIANIST JED DISTLER IN MUSIC COLLECTED BY FEDERICO GARCIA LORCA AND JULIEN TIERSOT AS WELL AS COMPOSED BY CHARLES WAKEFIELD CADMAN
Darynn Zimmer is a classically trained artist whose work has been refreshed and stimulated by the art of folk music as it has been transmitted to us by the greatest of modern Spanish poets, by a French composer and pioneering ethnomusicologist of the 19th century, and by a once-famous American composer of the early 20th century. “Savage Nightingale” is a passionate album that draws on the riches of these traditions. The album title is taken from one of the songs in the collection, Rossignolet Sauvage. “Sauvage” refers to those wild, untamed sources of inspiration; “Rossignolet” is the little songster whose natural voice expresses that inspiration.
The songs include flamenco-inspired music (“In the Café de Chinitas”), an ancient smuggler’s song that became an anthem for the anti-Franco army in the Spanish Civil War as well as the basis for at least two famous flamenco ballets (“Anda Jaleo”), some medieval French love music filled with double entendres, and an American Indian song (“From the Land of the Sky-blue Water”) that became one of the most popular songs in history.
In these new arrangements for soprano, guitar, piano and percussion, Ms. Zimmer works closely with the great classical and flamenco guitarist Eliot Fisk (one of the last pupils of Andres Segovia) as well as one of the most versatile percussionists of our time, Rex Benincasa, and the equally versatile pianist/composer/critic Jed Distler.
- Passionate flamenco music and sexy medieval French love poetry
- Collaboration between a major opera singer and a world-class guitarist,
both adept at crossing over!
- Native American melodies transformed by a Victorian composer who had a 'hit song' in 1909
“…Darynn Zimmer's juicy soprano adeptly communicates yearning, and she stops just short of overwhelming the music. She's got plenty of fire for El Café de Chinitas and a delicate touch in The White Dawn is Stealing. Guitarist Eliot Fisk delivers some nimble fretwork, while Jed Distler is the sensitive pianist on the Cadman. Percussionist Rex Benincasa contributes snappy castanet-playing in Anda Jaleo!…”
